Highlights of IIT’s New Student Residence Hall
Complex |
Complex will house 367 IIT students, beginning with Fall 2003
semester.
Designed by award winning architect,
Helmut Jahn, who studied at IIT’s
College of Architecture in the late 1960’s.
Construction began in May 2002, at a total cost of $28 million.
Village consists of three, five-story
buildings facing State Street and back up to the Chicago Transit Authority’s
elevated Green Line train.
Structures built of poured-in-place concrete, resting on an 18-inch thick
mat foundation. Total amount of concrete used: 108,000 cubic feet.
Building clad in glass and corrugated stainless steel panels and feature concrete
and glass sound walls to reduce commuter train noise and vibration.
Units feature tinted glass walls, exposed concrete walls and floors, stainless
steel fixtures, flexible room furnishings. Total amount of glass used: 65,000
square feet.
24-hour security attendant will be on duty at each entrance, with camera to
introduce guests via the Web.
Voice, high-speed data and TV jacks are installed in every suite, bedroom,
living room and lounge area.
Computer-monitored laundry services can alert residents via the Web when washer
and dryer cycles are completed.
Each building features landscaped courtyards and rooftop decks, offering a
panoramic view of the IIT campus and downtown Chicago.
Founded
in 1890, IIT is a Ph.D.-granting technological university awarding degrees
in the sciences, mathematics and engineering, as well as architecture,
psychology, design, business and law. IIT’s interprofessional, technology-focused
curriculum prepares the university’s 6,200 students for leadership roles
in an increasingly complex and culturally diverse global workplace.
